The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is a daily charge for driving a vehicle that does not meet minimum emissions standards within Greater London. It covers all London boroughs — roughly 630 square miles. The M25 is not included, but if you exit the M25 into London, you enter the zone.
ANPR cameras throughout London automatically read number plates. Compliant and exempt vehicles pay nothing. Non-compliant vehicles are charged £12.50 per day.
The ULEZ operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year — with a single exception: Christmas Day (25 December only) is free. All other days including bank holidays, New Year's Day, and all weekends are charged.
| Vehicle Type | Daily Charge | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cars, motorcycles, mopeds, vans & LGVs (up to 3.5t), minibuses (up to 5t) | £12.50 | Standard ULEZ charge |
| Campervans (up to 3.5t) | £12.50 | Treated as standard LGV/car based on weight |
| Lorries, large vans & specialist heavy vehicles (over 3.5t) | Not ULEZ | Must meet LEZ standards instead. Pay LEZ charge if non-compliant. |
| Buses, minibuses & coaches (over 5t) | Not ULEZ | Must meet LEZ standards instead. |
| Non-UK registered vehicles | £12.50 | Must register with TfL even if compliant |
What is ULEZ compliant? A compliant vehicle meets the required Euro emissions standards based on its fuel type:

| Cars & small vans | Diesel | Euro 6 | 2015 (most) |

| Heavier vans & minibuses (up to 3.5t/5t) | Petrol | Euro 4 | 2006 |
| Heavier vans & minibuses (up to 3.5t/5t) | Diesel | Euro 6 | 2015 |
| All pure electric vehicles | Electric | Always compliant | Any year |

| Disabled tax class vehicles | Exempt | Vehicles registered under disability tax class |
| Non-compliant vehicles (no exemption) | £12.50/day | Charge applies whenever you drive within Greater London |

No — campervans and motorhomes are not automatically exempt from ULEZ. They are subject to the same emissions standards as other vehicles. If your campervan weighs under 3.5 tonnes, it must meet Euro 6 (Diesel) or Euro 4 (Petrol) standards, otherwise, you must pay the £12.50 daily charge. Some older campervans that meet historic vehicle status (built before 1978) may be exempt.
Since August 2023, ULEZ covers all 32 London boroughs plus the City of London — the entire Greater London area. It was extended from the previous North/South Circular boundary. The ULEZ zone boundary follows the Greater London boundary. If you are driving inside the M25 into any London borough, you are in the ULEZ.
The ULEZ daily charge is £12.50 for cars, motorcycles, and light vans (LGVs up to 3.5 tonnes). The charge applies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year — including weekends and bank holidays. There is no free period.
